LONGUEUIL, Que. — Police south of Montreal say they are investigating after a mayor was allegedly threatened over her plan to cull deer living in a city park.
Longueuil police say they've received at least one credible threat against Mayor Sylvie Parent.
City officials recently decided to control the white-tailed deer population living in a municipal green space by killing half of them and donating their meat to a food bank.
Longueuil says the roughly 30 deer living in Michel-Chartrand Park are threatening the area's biodiversity and increasing the risk of accidents.
But the plan has been met with opposition, including a petition that had over 23,000 signatures as of this morning.
Melanie Mercille of the Longueuil police could not confirm the nature of the threats against Parent, but said police protection would be provided to her if needed.
