Whatever your ability, if you are interested in kayaking, Sault Ste. Marie and the area have an abundance of opportunities to try it.
For absolute beginners, check out the Sault College Waterfront Adventure Centre, which is open to the public as well as Sault College students. Hourly rates are available for kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddle boards. Along with that rental, comes some basic safety instructions.
Other areas to kayak, if you are a little more confident and have a kayak include Gros Cap, Echo River, Goulais River, Trout Lake, St. Joseph Island, Bruce Mines and a myriad of small lakes in the area such as Clear Lake, Ranger Lake, Tower Lake, Rock Lake and many others with public access each offering unique scenery and kayaking experience.
On St. Marys River, the City of Sault Ste. Marie has installed two special docks for launching kayaks and canoes. The river was recently under a water advisory after an oil spill but Algoma Public Health has given the all-clear to return to recreational water activities.
