As news broke Sunday of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's request to dissolve Parliament, local NDP candidate Marie Morin-Strom issued a statement calling the election "unnecessary."
“At a crucial moment when everyday people are still dealing with fallout from the pandemic and facing the onset of an apparent fourth wave, Justin Trudeau has called an unnecessary election,” Morin-Strom said in a prepared statement.
Trudeau met with Gov. Gen. Mary Simon Sunday morning to make the request, which means Canadians will head to the polls on Sept. 20.
Morin-Strom dismissed Liberal claims that Parliament had become toxic and dysfunctional, saying "Parliament is working as it should be."
"What isn't working is Liberal government policy," she added. "The gap between everyday Canadians and the very wealthy has only grown larger, and after six years under the Liberals it’s even harder for many Canadians to find good jobs, make ends meet, and afford a home.”
In speaking with reporters on Sunday after the decision, Trudeau said the election is an opportunity for Canadians to have their say.
"In this pivotal, consequential moment, who wouldn't want a say? Who wouldn't want their chance to decide where our country goes from here?" Trudeau asked.
"As much as we've done over the past many, many months, we've got a lot of work ahead of us. … You deserve a say, because this is your moment."
