On Monday, a roadside memorial was seen at the site of a fatal collision in the early morning hours on Sunday.

The Sault Police Service has announced the charges faced by the accused in the motor vehicle collision death of a 15-year-old boy.

Gregory Parise, 18, appeared in Weekend and Statuary Holiday court in Sudbury on Sunday before Justice of the Peace Ruby Beck to respond to multiple charges in relation to the April 20 collision at the intersection of Goulais Avenue and Third Line.

"Upon speaking with the accused, officers developed grounds to believe their ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol. The accused provided breath samples, which registered above the legal limit. They were arrested," said Sault Police in a release issued on Tuesday.

The charges include:

  • Impaired Operation Causing Death
  • Dangerous Operation Causing Death
  • Impaired Operation Causing Bodily Harm
  • Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm
  • Driver Fail to Surrender Licence (under the Highway Traffic Act)
  • Novice Driver – B.A.C. Above Zero (under the Highway Traffic Act)
  • Class G1 Licence Holder – Drive at Unlawful Hour (under the Highway Traffic Act)
  • Person Under 19 Years Consuming Liquor (under the Liquor Licence and Control Act)

The release notes at around 1 a.m. on April 20, 911 communicators received a report of a motor vehicle collision in the 800 block of Goulais Avenue.

"Officers were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officers observed two victims receiving medical attention from EMS. Both were transported to hospital. One victim, 15 years of age, succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced deceased. The other victim, also 15 years of age, has serious injuries," said Sault Police.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Parise is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

A roadside memorial has been set up in the area of the collision, with flowers, hockey jerseys and sticks, stuffed animals and wreaths. Markers left at the memorial have allowed for people to leave messages of remembrance for the victim.

The memorial is located just a few hundred metres north of Korah Collegiate & Vocational School.

Messages have been written on a metal covering around the utility pole at that corner, including: 'I loved growing up with you,' 'love you forever' and multiple instances of 'fly high, buddy.'
