Two Charged with Impaired Driving

1) 25 year-old Christopher Moar of apartment #3-864 Queen Street East was arrested on the 31st of January at 11:53 pm on Pine Street and charged with one count of impaired driving, one count of consume over the legal limit, one count of dangerous driving, one count of possession of property obtained by crime, one count of theft over $5,000.00 and two counts of breach of probation.
It is alleged that on the 31st of January at approximately 11:20 pm the accused stole a 1998 Honda CRV that was parked on Brock Street. The accused was observed by witnesses in the area of Ontario Avenue and Simpson Street driving erratically and at a high rate of speed. The accused lost control of the vehicle and struck a snowbank on Pine Street and the vehicle became stuck. When police attended in the area they discovered the accused was under the influence of alcohol. At the time of the incident the accused was on probation to keep the peace and be of good behaviour. He is to appear in bail court this morning.

2) 29 year-old Christopher Bentley of 198 Chambers Avenue was arrested on the 31st of January at 8:55 pm on Andrew Street and charged with one count of impaired driving and one count of consume over the legal limit. It is alleged that on the 31st of January at approximately 8:50 pm city police received a call of a possible impaired driver that was travelling eastbound on Wallace Terrace. When officers checked the vehicle in the area of Andrew Street they discovered the driver, the accused, to be under the influence of alcohol.
The accused is to appear in court on the 10th of March.

Possession

Two male youths, ages 14 and 15, were arrested on the 31st of January at 10:20 am in the rear parking lot of a business on Northern Avenue and charged with one count of possession of a controlled drug or substance. The 15 year-old was also charged with one count of breach of probation under the Youth Criminal Justice Act as at the time of the incident he was on conditions to keep the peace and be of good behaviour. It is alleged that on the 31st of January around 10:15 am city police checked the two youths in the rear parking lot of the business and at the time they were found in possession of a small amount of cannabis marihuana. They are to appear in court on the 4th of March.

Drivers urged to use extra caution

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service is urging all motorists to use extra caution at all intersections. Traffic signals have been malfunctioning after yesterday’s storm. Motorists are also asked to be alert and aware of pedestrians and other road users who may be confused by malfunctioning lights and signals.

Drivers facing a traffic control signal showing a flashing red, shall stop and yield right of way to approaching traffic. Drivers may proceed when it is safe to do so.

Drivers facing a traffic control signal showing a flashing amber, may proceed through the intersection with caution.

Drivers facing traffic signals that are not functioning are required by law to stop and treat the intersections as a four-way stop.
