GIRL ASSAULTS MOTHER
Yesterday at approximately 4:00 pm, the accused, a 13-year-old female, assaulted her 42-year-old mother. The assault consisted of repeated punching on shoulder, back and rib area.

The accused also kicked her mother, struck her on the arm with a hairbrush and hit her on the head with a knitting needle. Police Officers were called to the victim's apartment and at 4:20 pm arrested and charged the youth with assault and breach of probation. She will appear in bail court today.

SHOPLIFTER APPREHENDED AT WAL-MART
Yesterday at 4:20 pm, the accused, a 14-year-old female from the Heyden area, stole from the Wal-Mart in Sault Ste. Marie, nail polish and a necklace valued at $16.94.

Store Security observed the young female attempt to shoplift these items and apprehended her. Patrol officers were called to the store and arrested and charged the youth with Theft under $5,000.00. She will appear in court in the middle of March.

MOTHER TURNS IN HER SON FOR DRUGS
Yesterday at approximately12:00 pm, the mother of a 15-year-old male found drug paraphernalia in the bedroom of her son.

This was turned over to police and as a result of traces of hash oil in a 5g vial and also traces of hash oil on a wire and rolling paper, at 5:00 pm, police advised the youth he was being arrested charged with two counts of Possession of a Controlled Drug. He will appear in court in mid March to answer to these charges.

BREAK & ENTER ATTEMPTED
Patrol officers are investigating an attempted break-in at the Soup Kitchen located at 172 James St. Their investigation revealed that on the Wednesday, at approximately 11:00 p.m., a witness noted two males believed to be between 18 and 23 years of age outside of the front doors to the Soup Kitchen.

The males appeared to be attempting to gain access. When the witness walked from between two buildings towards the Soup Kitchen, the males took off running towards Allen Street. The following day there was damage noted to the front screen and it appeared someone attempted to gain access.

There was nothing taken from the Soup Kitchen and no access was gained. Police are continuing the investigation into this incident and requests anyone with information to contact them at 949-6300 or to call Crime stoppers.

MAN ARRESTED AT BAR

At 2:50 am this morning, patrol officers were called to the Roadhouse Bar with regards to a male at that location. Officers encountered Jason Jones, age 32 of Hwy 17 East and a police records check revealed that he was wanted on outstanding arrest warrants for Failing to Attend Court and Breach of Probation. He was arrested on the strength of these warrants and will appear in Bail Court today.

TRAFFIC ACCIDENT

Police officers investigated 21 motor vehicle collisions yesterday. Most were of a minor nature, however at 1:13 pm a 1992 Chevrolet sedan being driven by Margaret Berlinquette, age 48 of 139 Carufel Avenue, was northbound on Elgin St. through the Bay St. intersection, when it was struck by a vehicle making a left hand turn from south bound on Elgin St. to eastbound on Bay St.

The vehicle making the left turn was a 1997 Toyota sedan being driven by Dorothy Hamilton, age 72 of Bruce Mines. After being hit by the Toyota, the Chevrolet lost control, preceded east down the north sidewalk of Bay St. striking a utility pole, before veering southbound across Bay St. and coming to rest in the south snow bank.

Berlinquette sustained minor injuries and was transported to hospital by ambulance. Hamilton has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with Improper Left Turn-Fail to afford a reasonable opportunity to avoid collision.


COUNTERFEIT ALERT: $50.00

Yesterday local businesses turned over three more counterfeit $50.00 bills to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Police remind the public of an alert that was released earlier in the week:

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is currently investigating a number of counterfeit fifty-dollar bills surfacing at businesses within the city. The notes are clearly counterfeit upon close examination and feature ink jet copied images.

The paper appears slightly larger than true notes and is smooth to the touch. The reflective optical security patch does not change from gold to green when tilted and the micro printing is not visible. There are no clear concentric circles in the eyes of the portrait.
