Male charged with several weapon-related offences at Canada Customs A 66-year-old male, Gerald Smith of 3532 St. Lure Lane in Sulphur, Louisiana was arrested yesterday at 4:22 p.m.
Male charged with several weapon-related offences at Canada Customs

A 66-year-old male, Gerald Smith of 3532 St. Lure Lane in Sulphur, Louisiana was arrested yesterday at 4:22 p.m. at Canada Customs on Huron Street and charged with several weapon-related offences after being stopped and checked at Customs and found in possession of six firearms. The accused had denied having any firearms to the customs officers when asked and when pulled over for a secondary inspection the firearms were located and he was arrested.
The firearms, some loaded, consisting of handguns, revolvers and rifles were seized. Ammunition was also found inside the vehicle and was seized. City Police attended and the male was charged with the following:

- Six counts of careless storage of a firearm.
- Six counts of unauthorized possession of a weapon.
- Six counts of unauthorized possession of a weapon knowing that its possession is unauthorized.
- Six counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle.
- Four counts of possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition.

Canada Customs is continuing an investigation and more charges may be laid. The accused is to appear in bail court this morning.

Three Charged with Impaired Driving

1) Nineteen-year-old Ryan Hachey of 39 Robin Street was arrested at 2:57 a.m. today on Great Northern Road and charged with one count of impaired driving and one count of cosuming over the legal limit. It is alleged that around 2:50 a.m., the accused was observed by City Police operating his vehicle northbound on Great Northern Road.
The vehicle swerved on two occasions and the left-signal light on the vehicle was activated and the driver did not make or attempt to make any turns. The vehicle stuck a curb when pulling into a restaurant driveway and was stopped and checked by police. The accused was found to be under the influence of alcohol. He is to appear in court on the 21st of July.

2) Ronald Beith, age 48, of 9 Labelle Avenue was arrested at 2:55 a.m. today at his residence and charged with one count of consuming over the legal limit. It is alleged that on the 20th of June at approximately 2:47 a.m., City Police received information regarding a possible impaired driver that had been passed out in his vehicle in the parking lot of a local restaurant on Great Northern Road.
The driver was followed by a witness to Labelle Avenue as police were called. Officers attended and checked the accused, who was just exiting his vehicle. The accused was found to be under the influence of alcohol. He is to appear in court on the 2lst of July.

3) John Kerhanovich, age 29, of 3l South Eden Street was arrested at 1:23 a.m. today on Second Line West and charged with one count of impaired driving, one count of consume over the legal limit and one count of possession of a controlled drug or substance. It is alleged that on the 20th of June the accused was observed by City Police operating his vehicle at a very high rate of speed on Second Line West in the area of Goulais Avenue. The driver, the accused, was stopped and checked and at the time officers discovered that he was under the influence of alcohol. He was also found in possession of a small amount of cocaine. He is to appear in court on the 21st of July

Drug Warrant Arrest

John Pozzo, age 44, of 116 West Street (main) was arrested on the 19th of June at 8:30 pm at his residence and charged with one count of possession of a controlled drug or substance and one count of production of a controlled drug or substance. It is alleged on the 19th of June at approximately 8 pm members of the Sault Ste Marie Police Service Street Team and the Emergency Services Unit executed a search warrant at the residence of the accused and officers located four marihuana plants, some cannabis marihuana and other drug paraphernalia. The estimated street value of the drugs seized is $4,000.00. The accused is to appear in court on the 21st of July.

Male Arrested on Outstanding Warrants for Mischief Related Offences

1) 18 year-old Joshua Couturier of #2-482 Wallace Terrace was arrested on the 19th of June at 7:15 pm at the O.P.P. station on Great Northern Road on an outstanding warrant and charged with two counts of mischief in relation to an incident on the 21st of April where the accused damaged property at a local high school where he is a student. It is alleged that the accused cut off the legs of a stool in a shop class. It is further alleged that the accused also cut off the handle bars of a bicycle outside of the school. He is to appear in court on the 21st of July.

2) 42 year-old John Vanderloo of 1359 Third Line East was arrested on the 19th of June at 3:10 pm at the city police station on an outstanding warrant and charged with one count of theft under $5,000.00. He is to appear in court on the 21st of July.


Property Crimes

Two Break and Enters Reported

1) An apartment residence on Albert Street West was entered sometime between the 16th to the 19th of June. A television was reported stolen.
2) A residence on Walnut Street was entered sometime between the 17th to the 19th of June. The residence was ransacked and it is not known what was taken at this time.

Bicycles Reported Stolen

1) A red 21 speed mountain bike with white lettering was stolen onQueen Street East near Spring Street.
2) A red Kona Honna (make) bicycle was stolen on Queen Street last evening.
3) A blue and yellow 26” 21 speed mountain bike was stolen from Greenwood Public School on the 19th of June.
4) A blue Sportek mountain bike was stolen at East View School on Idaho Drive on the 19th of June.
5) A bike was stolen from a residence on Queen Street West sometime overnight.

Vehicles Entered Overnight

Vehicles were reported entered on Grandmont Crescent and Wilson Street sometime during the day yesterday.
