The Sault Ste Marie Police Service would like to wish all students a very safe March Break and offer the following safety tips for the community during the March Break:

If you are vacationing or travelling during the March Break:
• If you are travelling by car give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination
• Make sure your vehicle is mechanically fit
• If you drink alcohol do not drive
• Always use seatbelts and child safety seats
• Maintain a safe distance between vehicles
• Get a good night’s sleep before travelling and stay alert
• Obey the speed limits
• Adjust driving to weather and road conditions

Safe proofing your home while away:
• Make your home appear like someone is always home
• Have a trusted neighbour keep an eye on your home and collect your mail and newspapers
• Use timers on lights, radios, TV’s, etc., and set them to go on and off at different times.
• If you have a second car, leave it in the driveway to tell potential burglars that you are home.

Safety tips for children at play:
• Wear protective gear, including helmets when participating in outdoor activities, such as tobogganing, ice skating, snowboarding, skiing, etc.
• Do not play in or walk on snow banks.
• Motorists be aware and alert of children at play


One entry for bail court this morning

43 year-old Allen Carey of #30-864 Queen Street East. He was arrested on the 6th of March at 2:40 pm while in custody at the Algoma Remand and Treatment Centre on Great Northern Road and charged with one count of uttering a forged document. It is alleged that on the 1st of March at approximately 10 am the accused attended at the Prescription Centre Pharmacy on Queen Street East and used a forged prescription to obtain drugs.

Assault

49 year-old John Wainwright of 20 Manette Crescent in Brampton, Ontario was arrested at the Plummer Hospital and charged with one count of assault. It is alleged that on the 6th of March at approximately 9 pm the accused was at the Plummer Hospital causing a disturbance and when asked to leave by security he refused and punched the security officer in the face. The victim received non life-threatening injuries.
The accused is to appear in court on the 7th of April.

Shoplifting from Wal-Mart

37 year-old Janice Laforge of #204-524A Goulais Avenue was arrested on the 6th of March at 6:35 pm at
Wal-Mart on Great Northern Road and charged with one count of theft under $5,000.00, one count of breach of a release document and one count of possession of a controlled drug or substance. It is alleged that on the 6th of March at 8:06 pm the accused attended at Wal-Mart and stole merchandise valued at approximately $200.00. She was apprehended by store security and held for police. At the time of her arrest the accused was found in possession of approximately 1 gram of hash oil. Officers further discovered that she had moved to a different address than on her recognizance order and she was on conditions to notify the city police of that change of address and had not. She is to appear in court on the 7th of April.

Assault & Mischief

A 42 year-old male was arrested at 9:40 pm at the city police station and charged with two counts of assault and two counts of mischief under $5,000.00. It is alleged that between the 1st of October and the 31st of December 2007, the accused assaulted his ex-girlfriend by grabbing and pulling her by the hair and spitting at her. He also destroyed some of personal property at her residence. It is further alleged that between the 8th and 9th of February 2008, he threw coffee in her face and damaged some furniture in her home. There was no report of injuries. The accused is to appear in court on the 9th of April.

One Break & Enter

There was one break and enter report taken yesterday to a residence on Louise Avenue that occurred between 8 am and 12 pm on the 6th of March. Some money was reported stolen.
