On Thursday, Sault Police officers charged a 72-year-old man with impaired and dangerous driving after someone hit a vehicle and took off.
At around 9:30 p.m., a 911 caller reported a motor vehicle collision in the 200 block of Korah Road where one vehicle struck another vehicle and drove away.
"An investigation revealed the accused had operated the motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol and, in doing so, struck another vehicle, drove away, and committed several offences under the Highway Traffic Act. No physical injuries were reported," police said in a news release.
Officers attended the accused’s residence, and arrested Michael Bentley.
The accused was transported to the Police Services Building to provide breath samples, which registered above the legal limit
The accused is charged with:
- Operation While Impaired – Drug and/or Alcohol
- Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80+)
- Dangerous Operation
- Disobey Stop Sign – Fail to Stop (under the Highway Traffic Act)
- Fail to Remain (under the Highway Traffic Act)
- Fail to Report Accident (under the Highway Traffic Act)
- Fail to Stop After Accident (under the Highway Traffic Act)
- Follow Too Closely (under the Highway Traffic Act)
The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on June 16. None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent until proven guilty.
