HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS.

Dress up your kids safely.

- Use make-up instead of a mask. Masks can obstruct a child’s view, they can be too hot and uncomfortable.
- Make sure the costume fits properly. Costumes that are too small or too large can cause children to trip or obstruct movement.
- Have your children wear flame-retardant material.
- Make sure the costumes are bright. Use reflective tape if possible.
- Parents should accompany children. Group trick or treaters are less likely to be the targets of any crime.

Keep your older kids safe.

- Make sure kids go out in groups
- Map out where your kids will go and where they should avoid. It’s always good to know where they are.
- Let them know to stop only at familiar houses that have outside lights on.
- If children are out when it is dark outside, make sure the have a flashlight.
- Remind your kids to not speak to strangers, and to not enter people’s cars or homes.
- RESPECT others.

Treats

- All treats should be inspected before they are eaten.
- Avoid having your kids dip into their bags by feeding them a substantial meal before they start trick or treating.
- Throw away candies without wrappers, home made treats made by strangers, and any candy which looks tampered with. Report any suspicious candy to the Police at 949-6300.

Children love Halloween because they receive treats, but also because they can be a different character for the day. Be aware that sometimes children like to act out who they are dressed like and coupled with the excitement that Halloween brings, aggressive behaviours can be acted out. Costumes with fake knives, swords and guns should be made out of cardboard or flexible material. Parents should explain to their children that although these items are not real, they can still injure people. Better yet, challenge your child to find or make a costume that is funny rather then scary.

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service wishes everyone a happy and safe Halloween.
