One person is facing charges after an incident involving a firearm in the East End Friday.
At around 12:40 p.m. that day, someone called 911 to report there was an individual with a firearm in the 2100 block of Queen Street East.
The public was asked to avoid the area.
“When the accused exited the residence, officers proceeded to clear the residence, along with a camper trailer, to ensure they were safe and secure,” said Sault Ste. Marie Police in a news release.
“In doing so, officers saw firearms inside the trailer.”
After getting a search warrant, detectives searched the residence and trailer. They say they found a loaded handgun and a shotgun in the trailer.
Nicholas Berto, 26, has been charged with:
- Careless Storage of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device, or Ammunition x2
- Failure to Comply with Release Order – Other Than to Attend Court x3
- Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm x2
- Possession of Firearm or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order x3
- Possession of Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
- Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
- Unauthorized Possession of Firearm x2
None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.

Police have arrested one person after receiving a report of someone in the East End who had a firearm.
Shortly after 2 p.m. on Friday police were asking residents to avoid the area around the 2100 block of Queen Street East near Varsity Avenue.
911 communicators received reports of someone in the area with a firearm, police said in a release. Officers secured the area while they investigated the report.
No physical injuries were reported.
Officers remain on scene as the investigation is ongoing. Police have not named the person who was arrested.
