Police arrest pair after responding to report of firearm on Chapple Avenue

Public was urged to avoid the area amid a 'significant police presence' Thursday

Two people are facing criminal charges after police responded to a report of a possible firearm at a Chapple Avenue apartment building Thursday.

In a release issued Friday, Sault Ste. Marie Police Service says that 9-1-1 dispatchers received a call about a potential firearm at a multi-unit residence in the 100 block of Chapple Avenue around 10 a.m. Thursday morning.

Officers attempted to talk with everyone involved upon, but one of them refused to come out of the residence. Members of the Emergency Services Unit, Canine, Investigation Services, Patrol Services, and crisis negotiators attended the scene. The Mobile Command Unit and the Ballistic Armoured Tactical Transport (BATT) vehicle were also deployed by police.

Portions of Chapple Avenue and Allard Street were blocked off to traffic as a result of the heavy police presence, which drew a number of bystanders to the area.

The two accused, along with a third person that was inside the residence, were taken into custody by police shortly after 1 p.m.

Further investigation determined that one of the individuals arrested had spit in the face of a victim following a verbal dispute. The individual left the area and went to another unit with another person who was believed to be in possession of a weapon.

Two individuals were arrested, while the third person was released unconditionally. Officers later executed a search warrant of the residence, where a replica gun was found.

Dylan Daigle, 28, was charged with assault and failure to comply with a probation order before being released on an undertaking.

Marcus Wynne, 30, was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and was released on an appearance notice.

Both are scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 9.
