Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit found a Sault Police officer not guilty of a criminal offence after a man lost several teeth while being arrested.

The injury occurred on the morning of Dec. 11, 2024, when Emergency Service Unit members with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service convened outside a house in the downtown.

“A search warrant naming a 46-year-old male tenant had been issued in respect of a homicide investigation in York Region,” the SIU said in a news release.

The team forced their way into the home and went upstairs to the apartment.

As they prepared to forcibly enter the apartment, the door opened to reveal the person of interest.

“The man was forced to the ground and handcuffed by an officer. He lost several teeth in the altercation,” the release said.

The report said the man had three teeth knocked from his mouth.

After reviewing the evidence, SIU Director Joseph Martino determined “there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s arrest and injuries,” the release said.
