Drug Investigation Results in Arrest

On the 14th of April at approximately 3:22 pm, members of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Street Team were conducting a drug investigation in the west end of the city. This investigation led to a traffic stop being conducted on Henrietta Avenue. The male occupant of the motor vehicle was found to be in possession of 7.1 grams of cocaine, a digital scale, packaging materials, debt lists, cash ($465.00- seized as offence related property), cutting agents, a cellular telephone and a quantity of prescription pills. In addition, the male was found in possession of a toking device with a small amount of crack cocaine in it. As a result, 58 year-old Gary Yukich of 34 Herrick Street was charged with 6 counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and one count of possession of a controlled drug or substance. The totally value of the narcotics seized was $1380.00. Further, at the time of the offence, Yukich was bound by the conditions of an undertaking to abstain from the possession or use of cellular telephone, and was further charged with two counts of breach of undertaking.

Female Youth Arrested on Outstanding Warrant

A 16 year-old female youth was arrested on the 14th of April at 6:30 pm and charged with one count of one count of obstruct peace officer, one count of assault peace officer, one count of breach of a release document and one count of breach of probation. It is alleged that just before 6 pm last evening city police attended at the Essar Centre for a report of a suspicious youth in that area and on arrival observed the accused urinating just outside the south west entrance of the building. Officers ran a check of the female, who initially falsely identified herself to the officers, and they discovered that there was an outstanding warrant for her arrest for beach of probation. When officers attempted to arrest her, she continuously yelled and swore at them and spat in the face of one of the officers. At the time of the incident the accused was under the influence of alcohol and was on an undertaking release order with conditions to abstain from alcohol consumption. Further, she was on probation to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

Female Arrested on Outstanding Warrant

25 year-old Candace Couturier of 326 Sixth Avenue was arrested on the 14th of April at 10:25 am during a vehicle stop. Officers ran a check on her and discovered that she was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to attend court in relation to a theft related charged.

Domestic Related Arrest

A 19 year-old male was arrested on the 14th of April at 9:55 pm at the city police station and charged with one count of assault. It is alleged that on the 13th of April the accused assaulted his ex-girlfriend while at her residence.

Female Shoplifter Arrested

44 year-old Linda Moan of #210-352A Dacey Road was charged with one count of theft under $5,000.00 at 1:05 pm on the 14th of April at Zellers on Northern Avenue after she allegedly attended at the store and stole a pair of shoes. She is to appear in court on the 17th of May.

Domestic Relate Arrest

A 45 year-old male was arrested on the 14th of April at 2:45 pm and charged with one count of mischief after he allegedly attended at the residence of his ex-girlfriend and kicked in her front door causing damage to it. He is to attend in court on the 17th of May.

Break and Enter Reports

Four cottages and one shed in the Gros Cap area were reported broken into. A boat was reported stolen from one of the properties.

Mischief/Theft Reports

• Vehicles in the downtown area were vandalized and some entered. Some of the items stolen included a MP3 player, a passport, and a wallet containing several pieces of identification bank and credit cards, a garage remote and a gym bag.
• Solar lights were stolen from a residence property on Market Street.

Spring Seatbelt Check Campaign Underway – Several Motorists Issued Tickets

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and the O.P.P. conducted random spot checks throughout various areas of the city yesterday in conjunction with the Annual Spring Seatbelt Campaign. There were 42 tickets issued, 40 were seatbelt infractions, 1 cell phone violation, 1 other HTA offence and one driver was charged with driving while suspended, having no insurance and an expired val tag.
