UPDATE: Garage Fire Last night at approx. 9:15pm city police received a 911 call in regards to a garage fire on Arizona Ave. The Sault Ste Marie Police Service and city fire department are treating this incident as arson.

Last night at approx. 9:15pm city police received a 911 call in regards to a garage fire on Arizona Ave. The Sault Ste Marie Police Service and city fire department are treating this incident as arson. Anyone that has
committed the offence of arson is liable to imprisonment for up to fourteen years in jail.


City Police have arrested 2 youths from the above incident. It is believed that on the 3rd of July the two accused attended at a residence on Arizona Avenue broke into the garage and spray painted obscenities on the inner garage walls. They proceeded to then pour gasoline and light the garage on fire and then fled on foot. A 13 year old male and a 16 year old male were both arrested yesterday afternoon at the Police Station. Both have been charged with 1 count each of break and enter and 1 count each of arson. They are both expected to appear in court on the 14th of August.

There were two separate incidents of fires reported over night on the 4th of July.

It is believed that a garbage bin and 2 recycling bins on Glen Avenue were set on fire and a recycling bin on Denwood Avenue was set on fire.

Domestic Assault

A 49 year old male has been charged in a domestic related incident. It is believed that the accused between the 1st of May and the 1st of July did make over 50 phone calls to his ex-girlfriend and on the 16th of May did commit an assault on her by pushing her down and slapping her in the face. The accused was charged yesterday just after 9pm with 1 count of assault and 1 count of criminal harassment. The accused will be appearing in bail court today.

Three Youth's Arrested for Break & Enter

Just after 10pm yesterday evening City police responded to a call of three males on the roof top of 503 Bay Street. Upon arrival officers observed three males matching that description exiting an open area of the building. All three were arrested. A 15 year old youth has been charged with 1 count of break and enter and 1 count of personation with intent for giving the officers a false name. A 17 year old youth has been charged with 1 count of break and enter, 1 count of possession of stolen property and 1 count of possession of a controlled drug or substance. A 16 year old youth has been charged with 1 count of break and enter, 1 count of possession of stolen property and 1 count of possession of house breaking tools. All three males are to appear in court on the 14th of August.

Two separate other break and enters were reported in the last 24 hours.

A residence in the 200 block of Albert street west was broken into between 4pm and 11:30pm yesterday. The complainant is not sure if anything was taken at this time. A Second break and enter occurred in the 400 block of Woodcroft Avenue between 8:30pm and 11:30pm. The garage was broken into and a large amount of meat was stolen from the freezer.
