Police officers trying to arrest a person suspected of breaching their release conditions were met with a locked vehicle on Saturday, says a Sault Police news release.

When an officer reached through an open window to unlock the door, the driver grabbed the officer's hand and rolled up the window, say police.

Police eventually gained access to the vehicle but the suspect, who had previously refused to leave the passenger seat of the vehicle, "lunged from the vehicle and attempted to punch an officer."

Officers "took physical control of the accused" and arrested the suspect. The driver of the car was also arrested.

The incident stemmed from a 9-1-1 call reporting that the suspect had breached conditions in the 0-100 block of Wayne Court. Officers met with the accused in a parking lot in the 100 block of Denwood Dr., where the struggle took place.

Fernand Evely, 43, was charged with assaulting a peace officer, resisting a peace officer, failing to comply with a release order, breach of a recognizance and driving while under suspension (under the Highway Traffic Act). Evely was held pending a bail hearing.

Kimberly Laude, 36, was charged with obstructing a peace officer. Laude was released on an appearance notice.
