Attention Cyclists

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service is reminding the community that when they are cycling on the road, they are bound by the same set of rules as a motor vehicle.
As the bike patrol starts up for the summer, officers will be out enforcing rules and reminding the public on how to stay safe while riding bicycles.

The bike patrol will focus on enforcing traffic offences and bylaws. Officers on bike patrol are able to communicate with residents on a more personal level because they are not in a vehicle and are out in the community with citizens who are walking and biking. They will have with them booklets to hand out to members of the community about bicycle safety and rules.

Although the bike officers will not be dispatched to take regular calls due to lack of equipment, such as extra report forms, they may attend if they are near enough to pedal to the area and assist other officers.

The following are basic rules for safety while cycling.

• Cyclist over the age of 10 years must ride on the road way.
• Cyclist should ride as far right on the shoulder of the road as possible.
• Always ride in single file.
• All cyclists should wear a proper fitting helmet. All cyclists under the age of 18 must wear a helmet.
• Cyclist must stop for red lights and stop signs.

For more information on bicycle safety or to have your bicycle registered please call 949-6300 ext. 333, 334, or 201.
