West Side Story Kills on Opening Night - review below

Thursday, April 24, 2025 8:00 AM - Saturday, April 26, 2025 8:00 AM

West Side Story was heartbreaking when it debuted on Broadway in 1957 and it’s even more heartbreaking today because we are as divided and discordant as ever.

With its themes of bigotry, cultural misunderstanding and violence breeding violence, this timeless art piece is as profoundly timeless as ever.

The Sault’s Musical Comedy Guild is sharing its take on the classic musical this week in the Sault Community Theatre Centre. Director David Dellaire has assembled a large cast of more than 50 to stage this Romeo and Juliet inspired tragedy.

He has chosen to make the show inclusive and non-conforming to traditional ethnic and gender roles and has welcomed newcomers to the theatre experience. This is the show to do that, as it reinforces and enhances the themes.
Candela Harmsen, as Maria, and Andrew Stuetz, as Tony, lead the way as star-crossed lovers whose romance fuels the fires between rival gangs – the blue-collar, white-skinned Jets and the Puerto Rican immigrant Sharks – vying for control of the gritty Upper West Side of Manhattan streets in the 1950s.

Harmsen delivers spectacular soprano vocals and an endearing strength as Maria and Stuetz is a steady force as Tony, hell-bent on breaking free from the gang lifestyle and finding something better. His choreography, along with Emma Dingle, is a joy to watch.

The musical numbers are executed with energy, passion and flair and it’s hard to pick favourites. They include Something’s Coming, the Dance at the Gym, Maria, America, One Hand One Heart, Tonight, I Feel Pretty, Somewhere and Gee Officer Krupke.
The secondary characters give it their all and the ensemble players are a delight. Emma Dingle is an acerbic Anita; Josh Filion owns his swagger as Riff; Matt Stephens adds a menacing layer as Bernardo; Alison MacDonald is a ready-to-rumble enforcer as Action and Nathaniel Dewar adds humour and feistiness as A-Rab.

The multi-level set, with its chain-link fence and dirty storefronts works well and the scene changes are handled smoothly.

West Side Story combines message and artistry with commitment and grace. The show runs April 23 to 26. Tickets are available at the box office in Station Mall and online.
