With 2021 being a year of inclusivity, NORDIK, a community-based research institute run by Algoma University, and the institute’s Social Enterprise and Entrepreneurship (SEE) initiative has announced a series of free online workshops designed to inspire social innovation, activate local talent and increase resilience, with a particular focus on women, a news release issued by NORDIK stated.
The series, called Leading into the Future: Inspiring and Activating Community Social Innovation, is part of the Women of Ontario Social Enterprise Network (WOSEN) project that supports women and gender non-binary people who are typically underrepresented in business. Their goal is to create and grow enterprises that embed social values into their business model, the release states.
“The series will engage participants in the fundamentals of place-based social innovation in the COVID-19 context”, said Jude Ortiz, NORDIK’s research coordinator. “It focuses on what has changed, what people can do about it and the social pressure points that drive action. It reveals how regions similar to Northern Ontario have developed thriving successful enterprises, and features a variety of successful northern ones.”
These workshops will be helpful for aspiring and existing social entrepreneurs, community leaders, business development organizations, tourism and funding agencies, and the public in general. The workshops will have presentations, guest speakers and registrant discussion sections that are designed to strengthen businesses with social, cultural or environmental concerns.
Although the three online workshops are offered as a series, they can also be taken separately. They will be held on Mar. 2, 3, and 4, from 12 noon - 1 pm EST., and participants are encouraged to register in advance.
Despite the province slowly reopening and the Algoma region entering the Yellow zone, Saultites are still encouraged to continue following COVID-19 guidelines and stay home as much as possible. Many of us are staying inside and online now more than ever.
So each week, SooToday will share some of the virtual events taking place to help you make the most of these unprecedented times, and have fun safely at home.
If you or someone you know is planning a local virtual event (concert, class, celebration, etc.), send the details to news@sootoday.com.
