Dear Adam,
As we write these words, our hearts are leaden with the weight of time that has passed since we last spoke. It is difficult to believe it has been two years; it seems like only yesterday that we last talked. The earth keeps turning and we see people going about their daily lives, unaware of how much the world has changed. But on this day, it is very clear to us how different the world truly is now that you are not with us. We wish we had more time with you.
It was just yesterday you were running around in your blue and white fuzzy onesies. We remember that clearly. And how much you loved the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, and how you would rush home from school to make sure you didn’t miss an episode. We remember your many accomplishments and the pride and joy that you brought to your parents. And we smile remembering how much you love your little brother Jake.
Your profound respect and love for nature and wildlife has become resounded in our daily lives. We have started to learn how to slow down, to stop and appreciate the wildlife around us and the beautiful trees and scenery that nature has given us. Thank you for helping us see this.
That said, there is still an ache that lingers within us daily, an emptiness we cannot fill, a pain that cannot be assuaged. And this is what missing you feels like. We can still hear your laugh; your laughter and our memories of you are scored into the very fabric of our being. You are with us always in everything that we do and always will be.
In the end, life has taken us down an unanticipated trail and our journey has taken an unexpected turn. But on reflection, looking back on this path we travelled together for a short while, it was filled with laughter, happiness and some troubled times but your journey was never clouded with “could haves”, “should haves” or “would haves". And we endeavor to follow in your example and not make those part of our journey as well.
You are loved beyond measure, an irreplaceable part of our lives, until we meet again….
