Timing is everything, as the saying goes.
On Friday afternoon — two days after a group of Liberal MPs called on Justin Trudeau to resign during a closed-door caucus meeting — the Prime Minister joined our Inside the Village podcast for a wide-ranging conversation.
Although his appearance had been arranged well in advance of all the political drama on Parliament Hill, it ended up being Trudeau's first sit-down interview since Wednesday's much-publicized caucus revolt.
We asked the Prime Minister what his fellow MPs specifically said to him inside that room, and how he responded.
“One of the important principles in caucus is that we do have frank and open conversations that, as much as possible, stay inside of caucus," Trudeau told the podcast. "So I’m not going to get into too many of the details on it. But I think people understand that there were a lot of questions about how we’re going to make sure that we don’t let Pierre Poilievre become Prime Minister of this country and bring in the kinds of cuts and retrograde approach that he’s been talking about, because he’s not putting forward any of the solutions we need.”
Asked again if he has any intention of stepping down, Trudeau was adamant he isn't going anywhere.
“I am determined to lead this party into the next election because we need to put all our tools together and I am actually really excited about this fight," he said.
