LETTER: Algoma's steel is cheaper under industrial carbon tax

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre raises his fist during a rally Tuesday at The Machine Shop.

SooToday received the following letter in response to the article Poilievre draws over 1,000 faithful in the Sault, slams Liberals on crime and addiction.

In his haste to Axe The Tax, Pierre Poilievre seems to have forgotten that Algoma Steel is on its way to being one of the cleanest steel mills in Canada.

The industrial carbon tax rewards steelmakers who cut their carbon output, and punishes those who don't clean up their act.

Algoma's electric arc furnace conversion will reduce emissions by 70 per cent, making our steel cheaper than other companies. But if Poilievre cancels the industrial carbon tax, we lose that competitive advantage.

The United States currently has a 25 per cent tariff on Canadian steel. Who knows how much higher it could rise the next time Trump changes his mind?

We need to expand our trade with more reliable partners, like the European Union. And here, the carbon tax can actually be an advantage, because the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism will penalize imports from countries that don't have a carbon tax of their own.

There is no going back to the economic conditions of yesterday. But if we make good choices, we can better prepare ourselves for whatever the future may bring.
