LETTER: Is our election process unfair to Western Canadians?

'I am of the opinion that to help unite us we give respect to everyone’s vote, no matter where they geographically reside'

SooToday received the following letter about the upcoming federal election.

I would really appreciate your comments to my question.

Canada is such an expansive country that it covers six time zones. Westerners have expressed to Eastern Canadians their alienation every election because many times historically the election has been called before folks in Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories, and Yukon have voted.

The Nunavut, Atlantic, Quebec, and Ontario votes can often determine the result, which is broadcast nationally before polls open in the west.

Why vote out west when the result has already occurred? Is there any wonder there is western alienation?

My one question is why not have a day to vote and the day after conduct the vote count?

I am of the opinion that to help unite us we give respect to everyone’s vote, no matter where they geographically reside.

Day one vote. Following day count the ballots.

What do you think?
