A man, a cantaloupe, and death taking the stage in Spring Fling

One act plays, Cheating Death and Conflict, running from April 30 until May 4 at Sault Theatre Workshop

A man and a cantaloupe, and a person who cheats death.

Those are the subjects of two one act plays set for the Sault Theatre Workshop, running from April 30 until May 4.

The Spring Fling show features performances of Conflict and Cheating Death, directed by Victoria Filice and Grace King, with small casts and tight storylines that still pack a “mega punch” like their four act counterparts.

Conflict is about a man who falls wildly in love with a cantaloupe,” said Filice.

“(Cheating Death) is about a plethora of crazy people who come face-to-face with the incarnate of death himself, and they all go through and work through a bunch of different emotions: dealing with death, cheating death, and working with him and against him,” said King.

While Felice joked that the “primary difference between a four act and a one act is three acts,” she said one act plays are simply a more concise performance – but no less valuable.

“One's shorter, one's more digestible. One would have been composed for travelling view. One would have been composed to be performed in a studio like this. One acts are shorter, but they're not any more or less of value,” said Filice.

King said they can also be easier for cast members to prepare for.

Sometimes, with the one act you get a little more freedom when it comes to time, when it comes to rehearsals,” she said. “This is very short and sweet, easy to do in a short amount of time, and a nice little introduction to spring.”

Now in operation for over 75 years, the Sault Theatre Workshop regularly puts out new theatrical performances for the community to enjoy. Its next season of productions will be announced in the fall.
