She grew up with cows, loves bunnies and is a vegetarian.

And she listens to your conversations.

But not in a creepy way.

Artist Sarah Bingham incorporates conversation fragments into her familiar, yet completely fresh images of Sault Ste. Marie, commanding the viewer to step into the scene.

"I walk around with a note pad and write down things I overhear from people who are walking past me," Bingham explained during the opening reception for her show at Loplops Gallery-Lounge Thursday evening. "I then paint the spot where I heard it so I'm combining the location with the conversation. I've been combining text with buildings for a while, but this is the first time I've narrowed it down to just conversation."

My Pocket's Full of Candy, a collection of her recent works, is currently on display at Loplops Gallery-Lounge until Saturday, June 14.

Al proceeds from this show will be donated to the Soup Kitchen.

Artist Statement

To engage my city, I like to experience the pedestrian friendly downtown neighbourhoods.

While wandering the streets of Sault Ste. Marie, I listen to fragments of others' conversations.

These random words, phrases, and sentences paint a story for me.

And so, I create in order to allow my viewers the same eavesdropping experience.

In my current body of work, I explore the interaction between dialogue and the urban landscape using the medium of oil paint on compressed wood.

By combining urban scenes with dialogue, and thereby re-contextualizing the overheard conversation, I allow the viewer to explore that situation and find new meaning.
