Sault Ste. Marie’s historic canal will take centre stage tonight in the latest episode of CBC’s Canada’s Ultimate Challenge.

Now in its third season, the reality competition series transforms iconic Canadian locations into obstacle courses.

This week, contestants will face off at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site.

Built in 1895, the canal was once the world’s longest lock and the first to operate using electricity. It formed the final link in an all-Canadian navigational chain from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Superior.

The episode is set to air Thursday at 8 p.m. on CBC and CBC Gem.

According to show details, teams will paddle up the canal and then cross it from side to side on a slackline in high winds, repeating this task multiple times.

The challenge is designed to test the contestants’ balance, endurance and ability to work in difficult weather conditions.

Participants were filming in the city last year between Sept. 30 and Oct. 2.

There was also a local participant, Willow Morton, a 24-year-old mixed martial arts fighter from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

The Sault Ste. Marie episode is part of a seven-episode season that began airing on March 6.

Hosted by Brandon Gonez, the show features 20 participants divided into five teams.

Other locations featured this season include Tofino and Vancouver in British Columbia, Drumheller in Alberta, Saskatoon in Saskatchewan, Mont Tremblant in Quebec and Halifax in Nova Scotia.

The season finale is scheduled to air on April 17, with the competition ending in the Halifax Harbour.

Stream the full episodes for free on CBC Gem. Or watch on CBC television when it airs on Thursday at 8 p.m.

For those with a fuboTV subscription, the show is also available for streaming there.
