It’s never too early or too late to get your kids involved in sports. If you’re looking for ways to help get them outdoors and active, the Centre for Social Justice and Good Works is running a free recreation program this month for kids aged 6-13 years old.
The program – which has been running since 2017 – is called I Love to Move and will be held from 5:30 -7 p.m. at Bellevue Park by the concession stands on Tuesdays, and at the Peter G. Manzo park beside Tenaris on Thursdays.
Kids can expect to participate in a variety of fun summer sports, games and activities, with the help of summer students from the Centre for Social Justice and Good Works, as well as volunteers. The goal for the program is to get kids active and moving, at no cost to parents.
“With the pandemic and kids being confined to their homes for such a long time, now is the perfect time for them to get active. They can also make friends and develop their social skills and leadership skills in a program like this,” said Shreya Mathur, executive director at the Centre for Social Justice and Good Works.
“There was a study done by the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre where we found out that some of the kids in Northern Ontario were in the worst health in the entire province,” Mathur said. “So our aim for the program was to make sure that all kids have access to free recreational activities. Since the program started in 2017, we’ve been able to reach almost 200 youth in the community.”
Right now, the program is accepting drop-ins for participants or volunteers. If you’re interested, send an email to youthscjgw@gmail.com.
