On May 2 from 4 to 8 p.m., the 2019 graduating class of the Sault College Graphic Design program will showcase their best graphic design work at the graduate exhibit show Designers Block.
The event will take place at the historic Sault Ste. Marie Museum, a gathering place for cultural enthusiasts. Once inside the museum, guests will get a chance to meet with and view the works of the graduating class, the Designers Block. Admission is free with a cash bar available.
As part of the graphic design program’s curriculum, it is the students’ responsibility to oversee and implement all aspects of the graduate exhibit show. The event will highlight the creativity of this year’s Graphic Design graduates, and provides the students the opportunity to promote their skills and strengths, and feature some of their most treasured pieces created during their time in the program.
One of the projects that students were invited to work on was the development of artwork for the city’s traffic boxes. A partnership with FutureSSM’s Community Art Project (CAP), this project facilitates experiential learning, networking and portfolio building opportunities for students, while also preventing tagging, beautifying the city, promoting arts and culture, and advancing tourism and economic development opportunities.
Moving forward, this project will remain as part of the Sault College Graphic Design program’s regular curriculum. All artwork will be archived and used on a continuing basis for traffic box wraps throughout the City.
Designers Block is supporting National Youth Arts Week (May 1-7) by giving young people in Sault Ste. Marie the opportunity to showcase their talents, and express and exchange ideas.
