Jay Bennett: 1963-2009

Former member of Wilco, Jay Bennett, passed away in his sleep early Sunday morning. Bennett was a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer for Wilco, including the albums Being There, Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot .

Bennett was a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer for Wilco, including the albums Being There, Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

His departure from Wilco due to creative differences with front man and founding member Jeff Tweedy was the subject of the 2002 documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart.

Bennett recently filed a law suit against Tweedy for breach of contract and unpaid royalties.

However, Tweedy said in a statement today: "We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy. We will miss Jay as we remember him -- as a truly unique and gifted human being and one who made welcome and significant contributions to the band's songs and evolution. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends in this very difficult time."

The cause of Bennett's death is unknown and is under investigation.

He was 45 years old.
