Sault Ste. Marie Museum will be hosting a paint night next week.

In honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day, "Woodland Wilderness" Paint Night with Maureen Shelleau will celebrate the art style known as Woodland Art, which has roots in the Great Lakes Region, primarily with the Ojibwe people.

“The Woodland Art Style, also known as Legend Painting, is a distinct style of Native art that blends traditional legends and myths with contemporary mediums,” said the museum in a news release.

“It explores the relationships between people, animals, and plants and is rich in spiritual imagery and symbolism.”

Shelleau has been teaching art and animation for over 40 years at prestigious schools throughout the U.S. and Canada.

The Ojibwe Native of Sault Ste. Marie recently established her own art school, Algoma Art Academy.

Woodland Wilderness Paint Night with Maureen Shelleau goes Friday, June 20.

Tickets are $40, and include all supplies needed.
