Maybe you've heard the rumour, maybe you haven't.

Maybe every time you even think you might hear her name you turn off your computer/radio/TV, cover your eyes and ears (a tricky thing to do), and duck under the nearest piece of furniture where you stay huddled in the fetal position until the coast is clear.

The rumour I refer to is that which speculates Britney Spears will open the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards.

MTV today officially confirmed this to be true.

The pop-diva-turned-mother-of-the-year-turned-hairdresser is set to open the awards ceremony with her newest single, Gimme More from her forthcoming, yet to be titled album slotted for release November 13.

"You can expect the things we want and expect from Britney - that will all be there," said MVA executive producer, Jesse Ignjatovic. "What I've seen of it is great. She'll be dancing, performing, doing her thing. That's exactly what we all want. Fans that are familiar with her performance on previous VMAs will not be disappointed."

The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live Sunday, September 9 at 9 p.m. on CTV.
