It's always a good idea to become familiar with an artist's new material when purchasing tickets for a tour that supports said latest release.
Most attendees of the Matthew Good show at the Speakeasy Monday night obviously had no clue as to what to expect from the talented and intense Canadian artist.
Hospital Music, Good's 2007 recording, is dark and reflects the distraught musings of a man disheartened with love, life and the condition of the world we live in.
His incomparable voice during this soulful, raw performance went virtually unnoticed as the disrespectful audience nearly drowned him out with their incessant jabbering.
Sipping from a wine glass and joking between songs, Good snuck in a few jabs at the rude behaviour of the crowd, knowing the comments would be as ignored as he was.
Too bad.
The few of us who actually paid attention were treated to a concert so passionate and naked, it almost brought a tear to the eye.
New songs, Black Helicopter, I'm a Window, 99% of Us is Failure and Odette were scattered among older material, such as Strange Days, Load Me Up, Generation X-Wing and the only song to get a deserving reaction, Apparitions.
The beautiful, soaring harmonies and upbeat melodies of opening act, Dala were a welcome and sharp contrast to Good's somber performance.
I left the concert thrilled I was able to experience such an intimate performance but extremely disappointed that no else seemed to share my enthusiasm.
