Shot in the Dark Theatre Company has announced auditions for its upcoming production of Stephen Sondheim’s groundbreaking musical Company.
A smash hit on Broadway when it debuted in 1970, Company has won 11 Tony Awards over the years, including Best Revival and Best Musical.
Auditions will be held at The Loft, Algoma Conservatory’s performance venue (75 Huron St.) on Wednesday, April 30 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 3 at 2 p.m.
"Actors and singers of all backgrounds are welcome to attend. From beginners to professionals, and everyone in between, Shot in the Dark is committed to inclusive and diverse casting to showcase the talents of the Algoma arts community," the theatre company said in a release.
Auditioners are asked to prepare a short song and a brief monologue. A verse and chorus of a song in any style will fit the bill and can be performed a cappella (solo) or with a track. The monologue piece could be a speech or come from a play, movie, television series, or be inspired by other dramatic or comedic material.
"With its iconic score and sharp, character-driven storytelling, Company offers rich roles for performers of all backgrounds and voice types," Shot in the Dark says.
Variety and diversity in ages, looks, styles, and personality are an asset to a production like Company, and will be considered during the casting process, the show's organizers say.
The production team for Company will include Anthony Aceti (director), Rob Rock (assistant director and lighting), Vicky Brienesse (stage manager) and Hayden Jackson (audio). Assistance will be provided by Louise Stephens on vocal coaching and Abby Barsanti on choreography and movement.
Company is set to hit the stage at The Loft in the fall, running Oct. 29 to Nov. 1.
"With show-stopping numbers like 'Not Getting Married' and 'Ladies Who Lunch,' heartfelt solos such as 'Being Alive' and 'Another Hundred People,' and lively ensemble pieces like 'The Little Things You Do Together' and 'Side by Side,' Company truly offers something for everyone," the production team says.
"Whether you’re a seasoned performer or new to the stage, we welcome you to join us in bringing this bold and brilliant musical to life."
