Some old guy makes us laugh at Bottom's Up (10 photos)

"Who's playin'?" asked an older gentleman as he wondered through the mist towards the rear entrance of the Bottom's Up Lounge. "The Economy Studz," I answered. "Oh yea. Those guys. They remind me of Pearl Jam.
"Who's playin'?" asked an older gentleman as he wondered through the mist towards the rear entrance of the Bottom's Up Lounge.

"The Economy Studz," I answered.

"Oh yea. Those guys. They remind me of Pearl Jam."

Naturally I waited until he was inside before I burst into laughter at this most unlikely comparison.

The Economy Studz are a bit country, a bit rock and a whole lot of funk topped with a dash of rap.

Yes, they're a lot of things but Pearl Jam they definitely are not.

Sheldon Jaaskelainen, Robbie Adamson and Jake McEachern pleased a standing-room only lounge Saturday night with their unique and quirky blend of styles and influences that reason would dictate do not go together.

But somehow these guys pull it off to create a one-of-a-kind sound that you can't help but tap your toes and/or shake a leg to.

They're even kind enough to offer advice on zombie combat safety as they don their protective eyewear and break into Zombie Dance Riot, an Economy Studz original.

This fun tune, along with 12 others, can be yours to bring home on their self-titled album only available at their gigs.

To gain a bit of insight into what these young lads are all about, here's an excerpt from the liner notes:

This record was made without overdubs, effects or compression. We did, however, regard these concepts with fondness.

Jake and Sheldon thank their girlfriends who have cars.

Robbie thanks his girlfriend who is a car.

The Economy Studz are a very hands-on band with a grassroots approach to everything.

Even the cover for their CD was created using nothing but scissors, scotch tape, vintage men's clothing ads, an old wooden cupboard door and a colour copier.

And Adamson found his drum kit at the local garbage dump.

Funny, yes.

Creative, yes.

Talented, yes.

Pearl Jam, not even close.

What's next?
