Suzanne Motluk inspired by masters and students

Suzanne Motluk is very fortunate.

The local artist spent an entire year of her youth visiting museums and galleries while traveling throughout Europe with her family.

This, she says, set her on a path to incorporate some masters' techniques into her own work.

Her career as a high school Visual Arts instructor also provides her with a continuous stream of inspiration.

"Everyday I am surrounded by creativity and innovative thinking from my students, and to be honest, I learn so much from them."

Motluk is currently featured at Loplops Gallery-Lounge with an exhibition of recent works simply titled, Stark.

The bold works are teeming with contrasts; three-dimentional figures pop out of two-dimentional backgrounds, richly textured monochromatic subjects are punctuated with bright punches of opposing colour.

Inspiration for this show came from Gauguin's time in Tahiti and Caravaggio's use of chiaroscuro, a technique which utilizes light and dark to achieve a sense of volume in order to focus the viewer's attention.

Stark remains on display at Loplops Gallery-Lounge, located at 651 Queen St. E. until November 10.

Beginning Wednesday, November 14, Where Art Thou is a studio exhibition featuring recent works by three very different artists; Sherie McKay, Steve Alexander and Pat Gladu.

An opening reception will take place on November 14 at 8 p.m.
