Two of Sault Ste. Marie’s schools, Central Algoma Intermediate School (CAIS) and Superior Heights, are joining forces for an evening of live theatre at the One Act Festival on Thursday, June 5. The event will take place at Superior Heights and begins at 6 p.m.. Admission is just $5.
The festival will feature two one-act plays:
- "Boxes" by Kendra Thomas
- "Tracks" by Peter Tarsi
Each production showcases the creativity, collaboration, and performance skills of students from both schools.
Theatre educator and performer Carol McLean will serve as the adjudicator for the evening, offering professional feedback and celebrating the students’ work.
“This festival is an incredible opportunity for students to experience the magic of live theatre, not only as performers but also as directors, crew, and collaborators,” said Anthony Aceti, drama teacher at Superior Heights. CAIS instructor Amanda Moss adds, “we’re proud to highlight the hard work and creativity of our young artists.”
“Tracks” is Superior Heights’ entry to the festival and will be directed by Darius McRae, a grade 12 student. "After acting in musicals and drama class plays, I wanted to try something new and directing a play seemed like a good challenge.” The senior student is looking into a career in the arts, hoping that this first directing gig won’t be his last. “I choose this script [“Tracks”] because it really inspired me. It’s a story about people meeting on a subway station track in a sort of mysterious circumstance and the choices they have to make about their lives. It's very cool and digs into some deep themes.”
The cast of “Tracks” includes Joshua Glimo, Yssai Guillermo, Maggie Lawson, Cameron Leask, Katrina MacGlashan, Isabella MacKay, Lisa Macmichael, Liam McLeod, Evan Priep and Deslynn Saunders.
The play, "Boxes", is about coping with pressures and expectations from others. The main character, Jack, is curious when he receives his box as a birthday present. His confusion about the cubed oddity quickly turns to concern when his family, friends, and teachers begin filling his box with their expectations for him.
The cast and crew of Boxes is made up of grade 7 & 8 students and includes Jacob Bowyer, Pharoah MacInnes, Charlie Cripps, Raelynn Mackie, Betsy Carter, Evelyne Adams, Anisten Young, Luna Williams, Connor Bingham, Aanya Yadav, Aaliyah Jordan and Emma Rawn.
“Boxes” will be directed by Pharaoh MacInnes, a grade 8 student who has been involved in theatre since 2019. He wanted a change in pace from being on stage (most recently in "West Side Story") and is directing and blocking a show for the first time. The One Act Festival has provided a space for him to sit on the other side of the stage and explore how plays work from a director’s perspective.
The One Act Festival is also providing opportunities to explore props and prop creation. Grade 8 CAIS student, Connor Bingham, created the four Audrey IIs featured in Little Shop of Horrors. The festival will include a daytime workshop for the students where Connor will lead others in designing and creating puppets from found materials.
The One Act Festival promises an engaging and entertaining evening for the whole community. Tickets will be available at the door ($5 for students and seniors and adults) and donations will be accepted with all proceeds going to covering both CAIS and Superior Heights OnStage’s theatre programs.
Next year, both schools are set to perform another pair of iconic mainstage musicals after the success of their productions of “The Little Shop of Horrors” and “Les Misérables” this season. Central Algoma Secondary School (with their Intermediate program) will be producing “The Wizard of Oz” and Superior Heights will be producing “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” with both shows hitting the stage in February of 2026.
