To celebrate their spring production of Clue — a murder mystery play based on the classic board game of the same name — Superior Heights OnStage will be hosting a special fundraiser event: a Board Game Cafe!
"Designed to be a relaxing evening out with family and friends, Board Game Cafe is a chance to meet some new people while playing a variety of classic and contemporary board games," the high school's musical theatre program said in a news release.
"From popular standards like Monopoly and Scrabble and (of course!) Clue, to card games, tabletop puzzles, and more, there will be something for everyone to choose from."
Guests will have a chance to mill about and rotate between games or stick with a familiar favourite. Snacks and sips of hot and cold beverages will be provided.
This fundraiser for the school's theatre production of Clue is designed to provide some light-hearted leisure time, organizers say.
"Created to be a quiet yet stimulating activity, this is a low-stakes and high-fun event where all ages and backgrounds are welcomed."
There will be prizes awarded throughout the night, and teamwork is encouraged for some of the more complex games.
Students who are involved in the spring production of Clue, as well as those students who previously have been in Superior Heights OnStage productions such as Spamalot and The SpongeBob Musical, will be hosting different tables of games, teaching the rules to newcomers, and tracking scores and team progress.
All funds will go towards Superior Heights OnStage, in support of the spring production of Clue. The proceeds will allow the production team to build a complex set for the play, and cover the costs of theatrical rights, which can run toward the expensive end of a budget, even for high school productions, the young stage enthusiasts said.
"Students involved in Clue will gain valuable experience collaborating with their peers; they have a chance to develop their artistic skills at no cost to themselves, which is part of the Algoma District School Board’s commitment to the arts," Superior Heights OnStage said.
"This allows them to prepare for post-secondary studies and advance their leadership and creative thinking skills. Studies have shown that students involved in the arts perform better academically and develop into well-rounded, caring, and empathetic citizens."
For those who want to support the event and encourage the students but are unable to attend due to scheduling or circumstances, a purchase offer of a “support ticket” is available, where 100% of the ticket price will go toward the theatre department.
