WINNIPEG, MANITOBA - At the term of their national convention held from the 12th to the 18th of April in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC) awarded the prestigious "portrait photographer of the year" award to Marc Bailey of Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Surprisingly, two of the four images presented in competition by the photographer where not photographs, but paintings.

In fact these images are neither photos nor paintings but rather a mix of the realism of photography and the artistic expertise of painting thanks to the new digital technologies now offered.

This surprising mix of traditional photography and classical painting pleased the panel of 12 top national judges.

With painting, the artist has created a dimension and depth never achieved before with regular photography.

The paintings are printed on canvas with archival pigmented inks.

Then, acrylics paints are applied directly on the canvas to give a unique cachet to the piece of art.

During the last 3 years, he has been working with his daughter, Jessica, a graduate in fine arts at the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM).

After more than 25 years of fine portrait photography, "Les Tableaux Renaissance" (the name of the artist's new product) is the future for Marc Bailey's studio.

"I took a big risk," he says, "but the innovative technique and creativity was well appreciated."
