Statistics Canada’s 2021 report shows that over 9,500 centenarians are now living in Canada — a 16% increase from 2016.

Centenarians represent 0.03% of the Canadian population.

The 2021 census shows there are 20 Sault Ste. Marie centenarians - all of them women.

A recent 2020 SooToday story about a centenarian profiled Elsie Johns.

On Dec 8, 2021, SooToday reporter Darren Taylor wrote about Davey Home resident Margaret Nicolson who was getting ready to celebrate her 106th birthday.  Before moving to the Davey Home, Margaret lived in a condo until the age of 102.

How newsworthy will turning 100 be in the future?

Analysts predict that 100 could soon become the new 80.

Out of the 7.8 billion people in the world, only about 316,600 — or 0.004% — are centenarians.

However, research by Pew estimates that by 2050 there will be 3.7 million centenarians across the globe.

A recent article in The National Post indicates the number of centenarians could increase rapidly in Canada between 2046 and 2065, when many Baby Boomers will turn 100.

By 2065, there is projected to be over 87,500 centenarians in Canada.
