What is the difference between a house and a home? A house is a building, a place you go to after work, where you eat your meals and sleep. A home is more of an emotion; it’s a feeling, a memory. You go home and you look back on fond memories, you feel happy, safe, content and proud of where you are.

Everyone deserves to feel that their house is their home. Sadly, this is not the case for everyone. It can be difficult to break the cycle of poverty without some assistance. Hard-working people get trapped living paycheck to paycheck, maintaining their lifestyle instead of being able to improve it. This is where Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie and Area (HFHSSMA) is able to step in and provide help.

Students from the Public Relations and Event Management program (PEM) at Sault College are partnering this year with HFHSSMA in an effort to raise awareness, and funds to help support their mission! Our fundraising event will give businesses and the general public an opportunity to give back and help out HFHSSMA in a fun holiday-themed competition!

On Saturday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. upstairs at Rome’s Independent Grocer, the PEM students are hosting a gingerbread house building competition, “The Great Gingerbread Block Build”.

Teams of 4-5 members will compete for 2 hours to see who will come out best on the block. To enter, there is a registration fee of $25 per team member, the proceeds of which go directly to HFHSSMA. The gingerbread houses and all the necessary tools and decorations will be provided for you.

There are a variety of prizes to be won; the grand prize is a $500 advertising package which has been generously donated by SooToday. Even if you do not register a team, we encourage you to visit the event, watch the progress of the gingerbread houses and even bid on our silent auction item!

To register a team, call Alyssa today at (705) 257-8089 or reach her by email: Alyssa.Carolei@student.saultcollege.ca and follow our Facebook page “The Great Gingerbread Block Build” for updates and more information. We are incredibly thankful to our snow kingdom level sponsor, Rome’s Independent Grocer. This event would not be possible without them.

“We are so excited that we get the opportunity to give back to Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie and Area through our education. Planning this fundraising event is not only a great learning experience for us but it allows businesses and community members to get involved and participate in such a festive way!” Alyssa Carolei, a student of the PEM program.

“This is a wonderful collaboration with Sault College. The students of the Public Relations and Event Management program bring a lot of enthusiasm and great ideas. We believe the more people involved with Habitat the more people we have talking about the housing crisis. There is a real need in Sault Ste. Marie for affordable housing. It’s great to have the students assisting Habitat in achieving that mission,” said Katie Blunt, executive director with Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie and Area.
