After completing Phases One and Two, the city is now moving on to Phase Three of its Transit Optimization Study.

This study evaluates routes, on-demand services, and infrastructure to improve overall efficiency, accessibility, and sustainability of the transit system.

The project team is set to present recommended route designs, evaluate on-demand service options, and explore the potential relocation of the Dennis Street terminal to better serve the community during an upcoming community open house, which takes place June 25 from 4-7 p.m. at the Civic Centre.

For more information, see the press release below.

The City of Sault Ste. Marie continues to advance its Transit Optimization Study, which evaluates routes, on-demand services, and infrastructure to improve overall efficiency, accessibility, and sustainability of the transit system.

Phases 1 and 2 of the study are now complete. They involved data collection, a review of policies and demographics, and the identification of barriers within the current system. Community feedback helped inform the evaluation of current transit routes and services. Now entering Phase 3, the project team will present recommended route designs, evaluate on-demand service options, and explore the potential relocation of the Dennis Street terminal to better serve the community.

To share progress and gather further input, the City will host a second community open house:

  • Date: Wednesday, June 25, 2025
  • Time: 4 to 7 p.m. (drop-in format). Formal presentation at 5:30 p.m.
  • Location: Russ Ramsay Room, Ronald A. Irwin, Civic Centre, 3rd floor.

For those unable to attend in person, the presentation will be live-streamed at www.youtube.com/user/SaultSteMarieOntario, with a recorded version available for later viewing.

Feedback from both transit users and non-users is encouraged to ensure the final plan reflects the community's needs and priorities. For more information, visit www.saultstemarie.ca/transitstudy.

This project is funded through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Fund (ICIP)—Transit Stream.
