Crews work to repair washed-out Highway 17 near Goulais River

Late Tuesday, OPP estimated the closure would last at least 24 hours

A long stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway north of Lake Superior remained closed this morning following heavy rain Tuesday that created multiple washouts.

Ontario 511  reported access to both lanes of about 200 kilometres of Highway 17 between Wawa and Highway 552 at Goulais River was still blocked.

Photos posted by Ontario Provincial Police showed extensive damage to the highway as a result of washouts at Jones Landing and Alona Bay.

Late Tuesday evening, OPP estimated the closure would last at least 24 hours.

Police said crews were working to repair the damage, and that the highway would reopen when it's deemed to be safe for travel.
