Two local men no longer face charges stemming from an "alleged illegal event" that took place during the height of pandemic restrictions in January 2022.

Steven Hunter was slated to go to trial Thursday afternoon on a charge under the Reopening Ontario Act but the matter didn't go ahead.

At the request of the Crown, Sudbury Justice of the Peace Erin Olesen-Schinke marked the charge as withdrawn.

The charge against co-accused Tim Coderre was withdrawn earlier on April 12 when he appeared in provincial offences court, located at the Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre.

Hunter and Coderre were accused of failing to comply with an order not to host or organize an indoor public event.

They were charged in connection with a Jan. 27, 2022 gathering that took place at the former Sister Mary Clare elementary school on Glen Avenue.

It involved an event for the so-called Freedom Convoy, which was travelling to Ottawa to protest the government's COVID-19 vaccination mandate for cross-border truckers.

The pair was arrested on Feb. 4, 2022, following an investigation by city police and Algoma Public Health.
