ELLIOT LAKE, ONT. – On Dec. 10, 2016, at 5:02 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a theft in progress call at a local grocery store in Elliot Lake.  

The owner of the grocery store intercepted the man at the doorway, who was leaving the store with a full cart of groceries. 

An altercation took place between the man and the store owner and the man fled on foot. 

A witness followed the man and notified police when he got into a car along Highway 108. 

Police located the vehicle on Hillside Drive South and conducted a traffic stop. 

Police recognized the man to be the same person who had allegedly stolen a cart full of groceries on Dec. 8, 2016.   

Jan Rene Wilen, 43 years of age, of Elliot Lake, Ontario, was charged with:

  • Theft Under $5000 (two counts), contrary to section 334(b) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Assault, contrary to section 266 of the CC

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake, Ontario on Feb. 7, 2017.
