First freighter of shipping season set to 'lock through' U.S. lock

300-metre long Edwin H. Gott ties up near Poe Lock until locks open on Saturday

The Soo Locks on the U.S. side of the St. Marys River do not officially open until 12:01 a.m. Saturday, but the Edwin H. Gott arrived early this afternoon in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., from its departure port of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

The captain of the Gott saluted those on the shoreline waiting for this big day: the arrival of the first freighter for the 2023 shipping season.

The 302m x 32m freighter will tie up on the east end of the Poe Lock until the locks open.

Tomorrow afternoon, SooToday will have a crew inside the locks to visit and talk with the captain and crew of the Gott.

On Friday night, the Soo Locks Park and the viewing platform on Portage Avenue in Sault, Mich., will be open starting at 11 p.m. for those who want to see the Gott lock through.
