In remarks delivered at the beginning of Tuesday's city council meeting, Mayor Matthew Shoemaker pointed out that four Saultites were elected as Members of Parliament during the 46th Canadian federal election Monday.
"I want to congratulate our MP [Terry Sheehan] on his re-election," the mayor said.
"I want to congratulate all the candidates locally who ran. And across the country, I congratulate the re-elected prime minister, Mr. Carney."
In addition to Sheehan, Shoemaker pointed out that three other Saultites were elected last night to the House of Commons from across the country:
- Liberal Rob Oliphant in Don Valley West. A United Church minister, Oliphant previously served four terms as an MP in the same riding, from 2008 to 2011 and from 2015 to 2025.
- Conservative Kerry Diotte in Edmonton Griesbach. Diotte previously served two terms as MP in that riding, from 2015 to 2021. In addition to his political career, he worked for media outlets including the Edmonton Sun and Rebel News.
- Liberal Jonathan Wilkinson in North Vancouver - Capilano. Named a Rhodes Scholar in 1988, Wilkinson is a former leader of the New Democratic Party's youth wing in Saskatchewan. He was a Liberal MP for three terms from 2015 to 2025.
In his remarks to tonight's city council meeting, Shoemaker extended condolences to the family of Connor Dunn, the 15-year-old Korah student killed in a west-end crash on April 20.
The mayor also expressed deepest condolences to everyone affected by the weekend tragedy at the Lapu Lapu Festival in Vancouver.
