The Goulais River Fitness Center has closed.

Perhaps those who vowed to work out for their New Year's resolution just stopped showing up or maybe the demand for a workout space was weaker than the gym's owners thought it would be.

But whatever the reason, the gym has shuttered its doors and we don't know a lot about what prompted the closure.

A social media post states that today is the deadline to make an offer to buy the gym’s equipment.

SooToday contacted the owners but could not reach anyone – but there is a recorded message that provides some information.

“We are sorry to say that we have had to close down the gym. Unfortunately the call for service in our community was not large enough to support staying open to the public,” a recorded message said when SooToday attempted to call the gym’s owners.

The closure of the Goulais River Fitness Centre comes only a few months after it opened in November.

Owned by Brian and Jessie Dickson, the couple told SooToday in November that the opening of the health club, billed as the first of its kind in Goulais River, would fill a need for that community’s residents.

“We surveyed a cross section of over 2,000 local residents and they confirmed that there is a need in the community for a fitness centre.

"Nearly 50 per cent of respondents said that they would sign up as soon as possible and that they felt our community would benefit from a local fitness centre,” Brian told SooToday at the time.

The gym was located at 2771 Highway 17 North and shared the property with other businesses such as Pine Shores IDA Drug Mart, Castle Building Centre, and Country Kitchen.
