The Helping Hands organization and Robert Peace have been awarded the 2024 Nelder Award.

Established by Breton House, the award recognizes individuals or organizations who go above and beyond in supporting women on their recovery journey, and those working to strengthen circles of care and community for people struggling with addiction.

The award was established in 2006 and honours Breton House founding board member Genevieve Nelder, who was important in establishing Breton House and aims to celebrate those who have the same spirit of advocacy, compassion, and commitment to healing.

“Robert was nominated for going above and beyond to help those struggling in our community," said Burgandy Hill, manager of Breton House.

"He and the Helping Hands organization work tirelessly with a team of volunteers to create a warm and welcoming space, often with someone available just for a chat, and provide necessities like clothing, housewares, bedding, toys, and more to those who need them most," Hill said.

"Robert strives to bring the resources available in Sault Ste. Marie together, building a true sense of community to better support those in need. For these reasons and more, we are proud to present the 2024 Nelder Award to Mr. Robert Peace.”

Peace was on hand to accept the award.

“Breton House has long stood as a symbol of hope and recovery in this city,” said Peace.

“To be recognized by an organization that has done so much for women and families is deeply meaningful. This award is a tribute to every volunteer and supporter who makes Helping Hands possible. We believe in community, in compassion, and in second chances—and I’m honoured to share this with everyone who walks through our doors, whether they’re giving or receiving help.”

Breton House has served women in recovery since 1986, when it was founded by Women for Sobriety with support from the community. Its mission remains rooted in supporting women seeking growth, change, and healing from substance use.
