International Bridge Walk back June 24 after four-year absence

After a four-year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic, the International Bridge Walk is back on for 2023

After a four-year hiatus, the International Bridge Walk is back on.

The last event was back in June 2019. Then the COVID pandemic and the associated restrictions with it temporarily ended the walk.

However, this year, the Chamber of Commerce from Sault Ste Marie, Michigan and Sault Ste Marie, Ontario collaborated once again to make this event possible.

The 2023 International Bridge Walk will. take place June 24 starting at 9 a.m. sharp.

Participants must meet at the Norris Center in plenty of time to get ready for the walk.

In order to participate, you must have one of the following pieces of identification with you during the walk:

  1. A valid passport.
  2. A valid Nexus card
  3. A valid Enhanced Driver's License.
  4. An INAC (Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada card)

Participants 15 and younger must be accompanied by an adult and must have a copy of their birth certificate.

"It's been four years since we have last done it so we are excited to bring it back for 2023," said Tony Haller, Sault Ste Marie Chamber of Commerce Director.

The bridge will be closed to all traffic during the event, except for authorized vehicles.

After completing the nearly three-mile walk, for those who need it, a bus will take them back across the bridge to the Norris Center.

The Bike Parade that usually is part of the Bridge Walk, however,  will not take place this year.

"The Bike Parade is fun, but from a logistical standpoint right now, we wanted to focus on the walk. And honestly, the numbers in recent years before the pandemic were decreasing and to tie up the bridge for a longer period of time, it just didn't make sense. But it is something we could look at down the road again." Haller explained.

There are more rules, regulations and suggestions for those who want to participate in the bridge walk. More and more information will be added to this Facebook page as we get closer to the event.
