The Victoria Day holiday signals the start of the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services In-Service smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm testing program. Beginning Tuesday, May 22 Firefighters will be in neighbourhoods throughout the city spreading awareness about fire safety. Residents can expect a knock on their door beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a Monday to Thursday schedule in place.

“The purpose of the program is to offer valuable fire safety information, discuss exiting and home escape plans as well as test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in the home. As part of the testing, firefighters will also check for expiration dates on the backs of alarms,” said Public Education Officer Aaron Gravelle.

“During this time, firefighters will not issue ticket violations, rather they will check the safety and protection systems in homes.”

The program will run from May 22 until Sept. 27, 2018 closely followed by the start of Fire Prevention Week in October. The Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services encourages residents to test all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in the home at least once a month.

For more information about the In-Service Smoke and CO Alarm Program, please contact the Public Education Officer at (705) 949-3377 or email a.gravelle@cityssm.on.ca.
